The different types of grey coverage and your options!

One of the most common questions we get asked is, "What's the difference between permanent, demi-permanent, and semi-permanent color?"

While they all color the hair, they each have a different purpose. The best choice depends on your hair goals, how much grey you have, and how much maintenance you are comfortable with.

Permanent Color

Permanent color gives the most grey coverage.

Permanent color gives the strongest grey coverage and the longest-lasting result. As your hair grows, you'll see your natural regrowth, which can create a strong line of demarcation. To keep everything looking fresh, we recommend planning a root touch-up every 3–5 weeks for most clients.

Permanent color may be right for you if you:

• Want the most grey coverage possible

• Have a higher percentage of grey hair

• Like a consistent color from roots to ends

• Don't mind regular maintenance and salon visits

Demi-Permanent Color

Demi-permanent color helps blend grey, refresh faded color, add richness, or bring shine back to the hair. Since it gradually fades over time, many clients love that the grow-out is softer than with permanent color.

Demi-permanent color may be right for you if you:

• Want to blend rather than completely cover grey

• Prefer a softer grow-out

• Want to refresh your color between appointments

• Love healthy-looking, shiny hair

Semi-Permanent Color

Semi-permanent color is the most temporary option.

It coats the outside of the hair and gradually washes out over time. It's great for enhancing tone or trying something new, but it isn't typically the best choice if your goal is grey coverage.

Semi-permanent color may be right for you if you:

• Want to enhance your natural color

• Want to try a new tone without a long commitment

• Have little to no grey hair

What About Grey Blending?

Grey blending isn't one specific color formula its a technique. It's a customized approach that can use highlights, lowlights, or a sheer demi-permanent color to make your natural grey feel more intentional alongside the rest of your hair.

Does it help with the line of demarcation? Often, yes. Instead of a solid color meeting natural regrowth in a sharp line, softer tones and dimension can make the transition less noticeable. It won't stop roots from growing in or make every line disappear, especially if you're transitioning away from a dark, all-over permanent color. That transition can and most always will take more than one appointment.

Will you come in less often? You may be able to space out root-color visits if you're comfortable seeing some natural grey. But grey blending isn't maintenance-free: highlights, toning, and the condition of your hair still need attention. How often you visit depends on your starting color, the amount of grey, the contrast you want, and how much regrowth feels comfortable to you.
